It is important to inspect certain critical environments at regular intervals in order to detect and remedy any mold problems in good time. In crawl spaces and attics, it is common for moisture to cause microbial growth. Here, experienced moisture consultant Kim Olmås explains how mold develops, how to detect it and what measures you should take.

Crawl spaces and attics should be inspected at least once a year. The best way to detect moisture is to measure. These measurements should be taken at times when the risk of high moisture levels is greatest. Grounds are usually wettest in late spring, summer and fall. In attics, moisture is usually highest in late fall, winter and early spring. If you want to keep an eye on moisture all year round, it is best to get one or more connected measuring boxes from the Celsicom remote monitoring system.

We caught up with Kim Olmås, a certified moisture expert and construction doctor with extensive experience in the industry, to sort out some basic questions about moisture and mold.

How does moisture occur in crawl spaces and attics?

– In crawl spaces, it’s about warm, moist outdoor air finding its way in and meeting a colder foundation. This raises the relative humidity (RH) and can cause microbial damage to organic matter and emissions from chemical decomposition processes. The soil surface also gives off moisture, just as rain and groundwater can do,” says Kim Olmås and continues:

– In attics, it is mainly warm, humid air from inside the house that comes up through leaks in attic floors, penetrations and attic hatches. The warm, moist air raises the RH value in the cooler attic space or condenses against a cold roof, which also raises the humidity.

External leakage can also cause elevated RH values and microbial damage such as mold, bacteria and rot as well as emissions from chemical decomposition processes. High moisture levels are often due to the inability of the house’s ventilation system to remove the moisture generated by washing, showering, cooking, sweating and exhaled air. Outside air and water leaking into the attic also contribute to moisture.

On which surfaces does mould occur?

In crawl spaces, it is common to see growth on the blind floor (underside of the floor joists) in the form of white, gray or black patches, or on the ground surface. In attics, mould can grow on the inside of raw board, roof trusses, floorboards and loose items such as fabric and cardboard boxes.

– But not all the growth is visible and it can be very moldy without you noticing,” says Kim Olmås.

– Also use your nose to identify, as far as possible, unusual, pungent smells that may reveal microbial growth in the space in question. However, the best way to really know is to do a moisture measurement yourself or with the help of a moisture consultant or submit material samples for analysis by companies such as Botaniska Analysgruppen and Pegasuslab.

What can be damaged by damp and mould?

– Crawl spaces initially produce mold, bacteria or blue stain fungi that grow on the surface and give off odors, emissions and endotoxins (harmful bacteria). However, if it is really damp, i.e. if the moisture content of the wood is up to 26-30%, rot fungi appear which break down the wood and reduce its strength. There may also be mold on the ground.

The same development of mold growth is common in attics. There is also a risk of damage to furniture (organic material) and insulation from microbial growth.

What are the critical levels and how to act?

– In crawl spaces, the critical RH value is 75%, which corresponds to about 17% moisture content in wood. At the same time, we know that already moisture-damaged or contaminated surfaces can develop microbial growth much earlier,” says Kim Olmås:

– To combat mold, a crawl space dehumidifier is usually installed and set to a maximum of 60 percent relative humidity, which is the limit for rust on metal. Dehumidifiers are the most effective measure, but they require some action and supervision.

When installing a dehumidifier, you will need to seal all outdoor air vents in the foundation (to prevent outdoor air from leaking in), clear the soil of organic material and apply a vapor barrier to the soil surface. The dehumidifier may require filter replacement and other services after a certain period of time.

In principle, the same moisture values apply to attics. However, dehumidifiers are not often installed in attics. Instead, the focus is usually on reviewing the ventilation of the house and ensuring that the moisture produced indoors is transported out of the house via the ventilation system.

– It may also be necessary to seal the top of the attic so that warm, humid air cannot penetrate so easily. In addition, it may be a good idea to review how the attic is ventilated. Too much attic ventilation tends to increase the moisture level and thus also increases the risk of moisture-related damage.

Kim Olmås is pleased to note that more and more property owners and operators have begun to check moisture and mold more frequently.

– The most critical aspect of moisture damage is that it can affect the indoor environment and make people living there sick. Often caused by mold and emissions from both microbial growth and chemical degradation processes.

To meet stringent regulatory requirements while future-proofing its operations, Oriola has chosen to replace its legacy monitoring system with the testo Saveris 1 measurement system. The system, installed at the company’s two sites in Mölnlycke and Enköping, plays a crucial role in ensuring optimal temperatures and humidity in the environments where sensitive medicines and health products are stored.

Oriola plays a central role in Swedish pharmaceutical distribution. The business covers everything from deliveries to pharmacies and hospitals to veterinary clinics and other healthcare institutions. It is a highly regulated industry where guidelines from the Swedish Medical Products Agency, the Swedish Food Agency and the Swedish Board of Agriculture, among others, set the framework. All handling must be done in accordance with GDP (Good Distribution Practice).

– We also have constant audits. Almost every week we are audited by a manufacturer who stores products with us. The customer then wants to see documentation showing that our measuring equipment is validated and calibrated, what settings and procedures we have for alarms, how any deviations are followed up and rectified – and so on,” says Ingemar Järsand, property manager at Oriola.

Hundreds of loggers and sensors
The company’s facilities in Mölnlycke (southeast of Gothenburg) and Enköping (northwest of Stockholm) have a combined storage and logistics area of around 50,000 square meters. Operations in Mölnlycke include an automated high-bay warehouse for pharmaceuticals and health products, and in Enköping there is an automated picking system for repackaging.

The new monitoring system is designed to meet high standards of measurement accuracy, safety and documentation. In Mölnlycke, 155 data loggers have been installed with a total of 220 temperature sensors and 25 humidity sensors. In Enköping, there are 142 data loggers for 180 temperature sensors and 20 humidity sensors. The data loggers are used to monitor a variety of carefully tempered environments.

– The climates in which we store pharmaceutical and healthcare products span a wide range of temperatures: from storing vaccines at -90 degrees to storing pharmaceutical and healthcare products at room temperatures. But whatever the environment, we need to have total control of the climate – around the clock,” says Ingemar Järsand.

Overview and flexibility
The decision to choose testo Saveris 1 was based on several factors. The old monitoring system was wired and required extensive physical installation for changes. The new system is wireless, which makes it much easier to customize and expand the monitoring as the business continuously changes.

– Thanks to the new system, controlled relocation of products can be done quickly and cost-effectively without cabling or major remodeling,” says Ingemar Järsand and continues:
– “The system is also very easy to understand. We use a program for the administration of sensors and alarms, as well as a user-friendly web interface – Cockpit – which we work with daily. Cockpit is very clear and easy to use. When alarms occur, we quickly get an overview and can act before any deviations occur.

The new monitoring system is set to log measurement data every five minutes and alerts in several stages: at an early stage, an alert is sent, allowing Ingemar and colleagues to quickly investigate and fix the problem before an emergency alarm is triggered. This minimizes the risk of product loss and ensures that all climate parameters are within approved limits.

Installation, validation and support
testo Saveris 1 was delivered by Nordtec, who also installed the base station, all data loggers and sensors, and performed a comprehensive and thorough validation of the entire system. During an initial period, a remote desktop solution is used, which means that Nordtec can support Oriola with settings and troubleshooting remotely.

– Everything has gone very smoothly. In addition, the cooperation has been both instructive and fun. We are super happy with the system. It works exactly as it should, is easy to use and makes it easy for us to move temperature and humidity measurements when needed,” says Ingemar.

– This system allows us to confidently meet the requirements of our customers and authorities, both now and in the future. Thanks to Testos Saveris 1 and Nordtec’s support, we have the tools to continue to help ensure that medicines are stored and distributed in perfect condition to healthcare providers and ultimately private individuals who need the products,” concludes Ingemar Järsand.

There is an increasing demand for IVF treatments worldwide. This means that the medtech company Vitrolife’s growth journey continues. A key prerequisite for further expansion is continuous, safe and accurate climate monitoring in a wide range of environments.

Since its inception in 1994 in Gothenburg, Sweden, Vitrolife has developed into an international company that develops and manufactures products used for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. In 2011, Vitrolife acquired Igenomix, a leader in reproductive genetic testing mainly for IVF clinics. Together they are now Vitrolife Group, a global leader in reproductive health. Today, the company has manufacturing and laboratory operations in Europe, the United States and Asia. The group employs 1 100 people and is present in nearly 130 markets around the world.

Group management, as well as significant development work and manufacturing, remain in Gothenburg. It produces media, i.e. nutrient solutions that provide embryos with optimal environments during IVF treatments. Other major products are pipettes and aspiration needles of various dimensions used for handling eggs and embryos.

“We measure quite broadly”
– Our products need to be tested and stored safely, which means that we need to keep a close eye on temperatures in particular,” says Mattias Uddén, Head of Technology at Vitrolife.

It involves extensive measurements of temperatures in different refrigeration and freezing environments. Furthermore, heating conditions and humidity are monitored in many incubators, as well as temperature levels in clean rooms and storage areas.

– In other words, we measure quite broadly, says Mattias Uddén.

To keep track of all climates in critical environments, Uddén and his colleagues use the testo Saveris 1 measurement system. The customized system at Vitrolife consists of about 80 deployed data loggers that continuously deliver data from over a hundred measuring points.

Simple and user-friendly
Last fall, Vitrolife decided to upgrade the measurement system. Much of the existing measurement equipment (dating from 2014) was retained and supplemented with the very latest measurement technology from Testo. “Both financially and from a sustainability perspective, it felt good to be able to combine old and new donors,” says Mattias Uddén.

– “What I like about the Saveris system is that it’s easy to understand and user-friendly,” he says and continues:

– We can calibrate equipment ourselves, replace sensors and add new sensors relatively painlessly.

In connection with the update of the measurement system, Nordtec was hired to perform a validation. That is, a comprehensive review of the system down to the smallest detail. Having a validated measurement system feels safe, says Mattias Uddén.

Validation increased knowledge
– After many years of use with moving sensors and documentation that did not quite keep up, it was nice to get the whole system validated. In this way, we can ensure that measurements, data storage and related functions work properly,” says Mattias and continues:

– We now have clear maps of where all the sensors are located and all my technicians have increased their knowledge of the system. It is not locked in that a few can check things out but the whole group can do it.

One of the reasons why Vitrolife has chosen to invest in testo Saveris 1 is the possibility of receiving automatic alarms via SMS and alarms at specified limit values. Stable cooling, freezing and heating climates are essential for the medtech company. The slightest increase or decrease in temperature and humidity is devastating for the quality of IVF products.

– During office hours, we are the technicians who keep track. After 6 p.m., we have an emergency response team that receives any limit value alarms. When it comes to cold rooms, we need to be able to act immediately. That’s why we have chosen to hire an external company that is on call and can respond quickly if necessary,” says Mattias Uddén.

Increased measurement needs for new processes
Although Vitrolife has experienced impressive growth in recent years, it has no plans to slow down. On the contrary, a lot will happen in the coming years. Among other things, large parts of the needle department will be automated and the production volume will increase significantly.

This in turn means an increased need for measurements to ensure optimal climates for new processes and environments. With the testo Saveris 1, Vitrolife is equipped for the future. It is a system that is easy to scale up. Testo also continuously develops all parts of the system, to meet changing market demands.

An important part of the work of conservators Augusta Persson and Ann-Sofie Stjernlöf is to take preventive measures to ensure that the historical objects in the museums’ care are not damaged. At the Livrust Chamber, remote monitoring of temperature and humidity is being strengthened. The same applies to the Swedish Museum of the Holocaust, where there is also a special focus on light measurements.

The Armoury and the Swedish Holocaust Museum are two of a total of seven activities run by the National History Museums (SHM). The indoor climate in these environments is something that occupies a lot of time for SHM’s nine conservators.

– Ensuring the right climate is a very important part of working with preventive conservation. Above all, it is about having as even a climate as possible. In several places we have objects that are unique and priceless, which places high demands on the climate,” says Augusta Persson, head conservator at the Armory.

Optimal moisture level: 40-60 percent
Factors such as temperature and humidity must simply be within certain carefully specified ranges. Otherwise, there is a risk of irreparable damage to museum objects such as metal, wood, textiles and paper. Organic material should preferably be stored in an environment where the moisture content is between 40 and 60% with a maximum daily variation of plus or minus 5%. The exception is paper, which benefits from a slightly drier climate.

– Often you have different materials in the same environment. It is important to find a middle ground and above all to ensure that the values for temperatures and humidity do not fluctuate so much, says conservator Ann-Sofie Stjernlöf, who has the main responsibility for the Swedish Museum of the Holocaust.

SHM strives to be coordinated and have common routines around the management. Not least when it comes to prevention. All conservators should be able to stand in for each other and check measurements, for example. To make this easy and convenient, it has been decided to invest in the same type of wifi data loggers from the testo 160 series for all seven museums. The Livrustkammaren is the last museum where these logs were recently installed.

Extra measurement in six small booths
– We already have a comprehensive climate monitoring system at the Armory. The latest equipment purchased in the form of data loggers will complement this monitoring, says Augusta Persson.

The logs are for the basic exhibition on Sweden’s royal history. In six smaller stands there are selected, unique objects that you want to highlight a little extra. These include Gustav Wasa’s crowned helmet, a Pandora doll from the 1590s that may have belonged to Maria of Palatinate, married to Duke Charles (who later became Charles IX), and a bloody sheet in which Gustav II Adolf’s embalmed heart was kept.

– There is a moisture system with built-in logging in each booth, but it takes a lot of time to open and read these readings. At the same time, by opening them from time to time, we risk destroying the climate in the stands. We therefore felt that we needed a wireless and connected measurement that allows us to quickly and easily monitor the climate in the stands remotely,” says Augusta Persson.

In the larger exhibition stands, there is overpressure and constant air exchange to prevent impurities in the air. Light meters have also been installed there. Light measurement in particular is something that Augusta and her colleagues will review and probably expand in the future. More and more museums are shifting light-sensitive objects in long-standing exhibitions based on how many lux-hours they are exposed to.

Glass facade lets in lots of light
Measuring light is also a priority at the Swedish Holocaust Museum, says Ann-Sofie Stjernlöf. The museum’s exhibition, called ‘Seven Lives’, opened in June 2023, depicts people who were affected by the Holocaust in different ways. Clothing, photos, documents and letters are displayed in carefully climate-controlled stands.

– It is the first exhibition we have in this building, which has a large glass facade and lets in a lot of light. Although the stands are not in direct sunlight, we have invested a little extra in measuring both UV and Lux to keep track of how much light the objects get on them.

Ann-Sofie Stjernlöf says that the exhibition leaves no one indifferent. The contents of the stands make a strong impression on visitors.

– A costume from a concentration camp, for example, is quite… striking, says Ann-Sofie Stjernlöf.

Bloody garments and fancy dresses
Inside the Armory, both bloody garments and festive clothes arouse great interest. Everything from Gustav II Adolf’s clothes from the Battle of Lützen and Gustav III’s costume when he was murdered at the masquerade ball to ceremonial costumes from coronations and weddings. These include Sofia Magdalena’s court dress with a stiff skirt, which she wore at her wedding to Gustav III.

For Ann-Sofie and Augusta, the work of mapping the climate in different areas of the museums continues.

– “Once you start measuring and seeing results, you get good guidance on what needs to be done in the future,” says Augusta.

She says that they have recently reviewed the lighting in the carriage hall of the Livrust Chamber’s main exhibition. Sensors have been installed so that the light only comes on when visitors move around the space, thus protecting the objects from fading.
Both Ann-Sofie and Augusta repeatedly emphasize the importance of continuously logging the indoor climate to ensure optimal conditions for all museum objects.

– Our job is to preserve these objects for all time,” says Ann-Sofie Stjernlöf, to which Augusta Persson adds:

– The objects will help you understand a little better. Events become more tangible and you get closer to the story.

In winter, indoor air often becomes dry. This can cause physical discomfort for people and lead to static electricity that disrupts production processes. To detect and overcome dry air, it is useful to measure, and preferably log, air temperature and humidity over a longer period.

Cold air can hold less moisture than warm air. Therefore, the air becomes drier in winter. And when we bring in this cold air and heat it, the indoor air becomes dry. This low humidity can cause discomfort in the form of dry skin, irritated airways and eyes, fatigue and headaches.

Static electricity – an annoying saboteur

Dry indoor air can also result in static electricity, which occurs at the surface of materials when there is either a deficit or excess of electrons. We can then experience unexpected and unpleasant shocks. The voltage can be high but the current is very low. Therefore, these shocks are often harmless to us. However, there is a risk of equipment and processes being affected.

Electronics and printed circuit boards are sensitive to static electricity. In addition, static charge attracts dust and other unwanted particles, which can have a negative impact on production processes. Lower production rates, sudden and costly downtime, the need for extra maintenance and, in the worst case, replacement of parts are examples of some common failures. Disruptions in production can also ultimately lead to lower product quality.

Moisture – an important measurement parameter

For us humans, it is about avoiding ill health. For materials, this may involve avoiding disruptions in manufacturing processes or storing in a climate that provides the best durability.

Humidity levels can fluctuate rapidly, a 10°C drop in outdoor temperature can reduce indoor humidity by almost 15%RH. Measurement provides knowledge of the situation and the ability to influence it.

Cold outside means dry inside

The table shows what happens when humid outdoor air is brought in and heated to 22°C. For example when outdoor air with 80 % humidity and a temperature of -5 °C enters and is heated to +22 °C, the relative humidity drops dramatically to only 14 %RH. An average humidity in the Sahara is around 25 %RH!

Halland Art Museum is beautifully located next to Nissan and Norre Katts Park in Halmstad. Here visitors can enjoy exhibitions and exciting events. A few years ago, the museum underwent a major refurbishment. The house was renovated and an extension added with the entrance facing the city. As part of this work, the museum invested in measuring equipment to monitor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and light in different spaces.

A total of 20 testo 160 WiFi data loggers were purchased by Stefan Kjelberg, the store manager, to monitor the indoor climate at the art museum.

Why do you want to measure temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and light?
– Because the art we have is sensitive to temperature fluctuations and because a lot of light over a long period of time damages paintings. For example, if it is too dry, the wooden frames of the art can twist or shrink, which in turn can damage the painting.

Where are the measurement boxes located?
– We measure in the exhibition halls and in our art warehouse. I also have two testo 160 IAQs in public spaces to monitor the CO2 content of the indoor air, so that the air is not too bad for visitors.

What are your impressions of the measurement system?
– I am very happy with the system! It’s nice to have a cloud service that gives you an overview of all the devices in the house.

Is the cloud service working well?
– Yes, it works well. If I had a complaint, it would be that you can’t see averages in chart mode. It’s usually the average value that we want to be stable so that we don’t get too large fluctuations in, for example, humidity or temperature. So we mostly choose to look at the values in table mode, where it is possible to see averages.

How many measuring points do you have?
– We have 20 measuring points where we have installed data loggers of the type testo 160 TH (°C and %RH), testo 160 THL (°C, %RH, lux and UV) and testo 160 IAQ (CO2, °C, %RH and mbar).

How do you use the logger system in practice?
– During installation, all data logs were registered in the cloud service. After that, all you have to do is log in via the web interface to see the current measurement data from all 20 measurement points.

– We have four different ventilation systems with external sensors around the museum. By setting up the testo 160 loggers alongside these sensors, I can follow all the readings at these points.

– When I see that the measured values are not optimal, I can control all four installations via a dedicated web interface and cool, heat or humidify the premises. So I have full control of the indoor climate!

Does the monitoring of the indoor climate cause any disturbance to visitors?
– As we have mostly white walls everywhere in the art galleries, the logos blend in very well. We have also purchased covers for all logs that can be painted, if necessary.

Has a temperature alarm or something else exciting happened?
– No, unfortunately I have no exciting alarms to tell you about, but we have a refrigerated magazine for photography and in there I have put a testo 160 THL. It has helped us a lot in getting the right climate in the cooled reservoir and in the lock.

How did you monitor the indoor climate before?
– We used to have standard data loggers that you had to walk around and read manually, which was very time-consuming. We also could not see any real-time metrics.

– Thanks to the Testo cloud service, we can collect measurements automatically whenever we want. I’ve set them to measure once an hour and send the data to the cloud once an hour, so now you can adjust the temperature and humidity in the rooms pretty much immediately if you need to.

Do you have plans to expand the system?
– Yes, more logs may be needed. For example, I would like to put logs in our external magazine as well. However, we cannot change the temperature and humidity as well as in the museum. But I could get a good picture of what the climate is like there over time.

Since 1982, Almondy has been spreading the joy of coffee with its frozen cakes. The Daimt cake, which has been around for over 20 years, remains the company’s best seller worldwide. To ensure a high quality of both raw materials and finished baked goods, Almondy has a strong focus on reliable temperature monitoring at all stages.

In an 8,000 square meter facility in Torslanda outside Gothenburg, Sweden, Almondy develops and bakes frozen cakes and cookies. Annual production amounts to no less than 18 million frozen desserts sold in some 50 countries worldwide. The largest markets are the Nordic countries and Germany.

Almondy’s first product was the almond cake, which is still available. Over the years, it has been joined by other frozen cakes, the result of collaborations with famous brands such as Daim, Toblerone, Milka and Cadbury. But despite new additions of tasty cakes such as this year’s Salted Caramel Crush, the Daimt cake is still the biggest seller. Margareta Johannesson, Quality and Sustainability Manager at Almondy, thinks she knows why.

Universal taste of the Daimt cake
– It has a universal taste that is easy to like. Other flavors can be very national. In Germany, for example, people like cherries and in Finland licorice is popular,” says Margareta.

Receiving and carefully checking raw materials such as cream, eggs and chocolate is the first important step in the production of the popular cakes. The raw materials are then processed in different ways. Cake bases are baked and baked. Creams are mixed together and pasteurized. Various toppings and chocolate mixtures are added and then the cakes are assembled, frozen and packed and then stored in cold storage for delivery.

The production is highly automated and consists of two production lines that together produce almost 4,000 cakes per hour. Anna Jörhov, microbiologist and quality specialist at Almondy, says that the challenges in production are about ensuring quality at every stage.

Logs in cold, freezing and heating rooms
– Everything from ensuring good raw materials to making sure that everything we make is good to eat, for example that there are no burnt cake bases and that the cream is cooked to the right temperature so that it holds together well.

To keep track of temperatures, Almondy uses data loggers from the Testo measurement system at six locations in cold, freezer and heating rooms. The loggers are an invaluable tool to ensure, for example, that cream is kept in the right cooling conditions and that chocolate is kept perfectly warm and remains liquid.

– The data loggers give us good statistics on how everything works, so we can meet the requirements of different standards. We also get good information that we can share with all employees internally, to show the temperature fluctuations that can occur if, for example, a door is left open for too long,” says Margareta Johannesson and continues:

– It also gives us a good basis for showing our customers if they are skeptical about a product they have received. We then have evidence that, for example, the freezer has never been above minus 18 degrees.

Makes daily work easier

There are many advantages to data loggers, say Anna and Margareta. First, they automatically send an alarm to Almondy’s service department if, for example, the temperature rises in a freezer. On the other hand, the loggers make daily work much easier.

– I can sit at the computer and easily retrieve data back in time, for a specific day and time,” says Anna.

She is joined by Margareta:

– Previously I had to get all the loggers, connect them to the computer and print out all the statistics on paper. So the data loggers we use today have made our job much easier.

In addition to the stationary loggers, Almondy also has various handheld instruments from Testo for quick checking of raw material deliveries and as reference meters for sensors in a large number of tanks. The latter involves operators using the testo 108 food thermometer to carry out spot checks, such as checking that the cream is at the right temperature.

Task: tasting
Anna and Margareta make no secret of the fact that they and their colleagues eat a lot of cake. One of their tasks is also to taste and comment on new flavors. So which cake is your favorite?

– Salted Caramel Crush! The juicy almond base, the buttercream which is divine, the peanuts and then the salted coal and chocolate. There’s nothing that doesn’t work,” says Anna.

Margareta has a little more difficulty choosing a clear favorite, but finally says:

– As well as the original, the almond cake, we have a lemon mousse cake which I think is really good. I really like the variety of our range. When we host a cake party, there are lots of delicious flavors to choose from.
