Field calibration Linda back

Would you like us to calibrate your instruments on site?

Field calibration is a perfect solution for those who, for various reasons, are unable to dismantle and send your measuring equipment for calibration in our lab. Instead, we come and calibrate loggers and sensors on your premises, with minimal disruption to your business. We offer accredited field calibration of several measurement quantities.

Questions & answers on calibration

Here you will find answers to the most common questions asked by our calibration customers.

My IR thermometer is completely wrong! What has happened?

– The most common error is that the emission factor has been accidentally changed in your IR thermometer. Different materials and surfaces emit different amounts of thermal radiation, so your instrument needs to be set up correctly, depending on what is being measured. The default setting that is correct for most materials is E 0.95.

Why do I get a correction value after an adjustment? Surely the meter should read exactly right?

– Before making an adjustment, the sensor or instrument must be calibrated to see how large the measurement error is. Then the adjustment is carried out. Finally, another calibration is needed to see how large (or rather small) the measurement error has become. The remaining measurement error is entered as a correction value in the calibration certificate. It is extremely rare that the measurement error disappears completely. After an adjustment in one point, other points in the measuring range are affected, especially in temperature and humidity sensors. Therefore, a correction value is still needed in the different points.

What is the difference between accredited and traceable calibration?

– An accredited calibration is performed using a method approved by Swedac, Sweden’s national accreditation body. A traceable calibration is performed with similar quality requirements, with a traceable reference as a comparison measure, but the method used is not approved by Swedac.

Do I need to calibrate my instruments?

– It depends. Often it is laws and authorities that require instruments and sensors to be calibrated, but the requirements can also come from your own business or your own customers.
– For example, ISO 9001-certified industrial companies are required to use calibrated measuring instruments for all measurements important to their business.
– Another example is companies in the pharmaceutical sector that have to comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.
– To find out which criteria apply in your particular field, a good place to start is with your professional association. Businesses in the food sector can visit the website of the Finnish Food Authority and look under “Industry guidelines”. There are downloadable documents on what applies to everything from bakeries to breweries.

How do you know which measuring points to choose for the calibration?

– The choice of calibration points is always the responsibility of the client. Thus, you need to identify which calibration points within the measurement area are to be checked. If you just want to check that grilled chicken meat has a core temperature of +72°C, it is enough to check just that point. But if, for example, a thermometer is used in a range between -18 °C and +120 °C, you need to select a number of measurement points where it is particularly important that the measurement results are accurate. If you still have trouble choosing points, there are also standard proofs and certificates with a number of common measurement points.

How often do I need to calibrate my measuring instruments?

– The most common practice is to calibrate your measuring instruments once a year. However, instruments that are used frequently and in harsh environments may need to be calibrated more often.

– The Swedac website states the following:

To obtain reliable measuring instruments, they should be regularly calibrated by a calibration laboratory. The calibration laboratory compares the measuring instrument with an accurate measure, i.e. a traceable standard.
